Fall '24 HNA Meeting: Wednesday 9/18 at Highland Neighborhood Park
Hello, fellow Highlanders!
It’s time once again for our quarterly general meeting! We’ll gather at the Highland Neighborhood Park at 401 W. St Johns Ave (look for us near the playground!) on Wednesday, September 18 from 6-8 pm. We’ll bring some extra seating, but folks who are able to tote in their own folding chairs are encouraged to do so.
We’ll also aim to broadcast via Zoom if we’re able to get a solid internet connection. The agenda is available here.
📅 What’s On the Agenda? 📅
Development and zoning updates from the Neighborhood Contact Team
Mobility, transit, and walkability updates from our mobility committee, which strategizes on ways to improve pedestrian infrastructure and safety as development/density grows
Parks and public spaces updates, including on the incoming public art project created by Samara Barks
If y’all have additional questions, concerns, or conversations you’d like to get started with your neighbors, please email me — president@highlandneighborhood.org — and I’ll see about adding items to the agenda!
The last day to register to vote in Texas is October 7th. The Texas Tribune has a helpful how-to guide, including resources for young voters and voters with disabilities. If you’ve never voted in Texas before, keep in mind that while you can start your voter registration online, the application has to be completed by mail or with a voter registrar: here’s more from the Texas Secretary of State. (You can also register to vote while renewing your drivers license!)
The November 5th election includes an Austin mayoral contest and a vote for Highland’s District 4 City Council member — thanks to neighbor Lisa for posting a list of upcoming public forums with opportunities to meet and hear from candidates in the Facebook group!
🍂 Covid Vaccines and Flu Shots 🍂
‘Tis the season to get the jab(s)! COVID cases are on the rise in Texas, but updated vaccines are available at area pharmacies. Check out vaccines.gov for a location near you. Don’t forget to get your flu shot, too!
🎃 Halloween Yard Contest 🎃
As a Halloween enthusiast, I’m excited to announce the HNA’s second annual Halloween yard decorating contest for Highland neighbors! I’ll make the rounds on Monday, October 28th and award prizes for first, second, and third place winners.

🚮 Trash + Recycling 🚮
The City of Austin has a neat online tool that allows residents to track upcoming pickups and bulk and brush collection schedules — just enter your address. Keep in mind that the brown bins are for landfill trash, the blue bins are for recycling only, and the green bins are for compost. If you’ve got the wrong items in the wrong bin, your waste won’t be collected.
See y’all Soon!
Cheers,
Andrea
